Zoom Q&A

  • ZOOM! Teeth Whitening Questions & Answers

In this page we have attempted to answer some of the most commonly asked zoom teeth whitening questions. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and comment on the bottom of this page. We’ll be glad to answer those as well. So let’s get started:

    What is Zoom Teeth Whitening?

    • Zoom teeth whitening is a bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin and it’s offered by teeth whitening professionals as a technique to remove staining from the teeth.

    What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

    • There are many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

How White Will My Teeth Get?

    • In clinical studies, ZOOM has been able to achieve over 8+ shades whiter on average. Your results of course will vary as your starting point maybe different and everyone’s teeth respond a little differently, but in virtually all cases, the results are dramatic. Ultimately, the goal will be to achieve your optimum, natural whiteness. During the consultation, the dentist will go over what you personally can expect for your individual situation. Severe discoloration can be treated and yield good results in many instances. However, the more difficult cases can sometimes require a more lengthy treatment than the standard one-hour treatment.

    Is Zoom Teeth Whitening Safe?

    • Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any tooth whitening product, Zoom! is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women. The ZOOM! procedure will not soften enamel, weaken existing fillings or remove a layer from the tooth.
The primary ingredient in the ZOOM’s gel is hydrogen peroxide, which has been safely used in teeth whitening for over 100 years and is recognized as an effective whitening ingredient by the dental community. The percentage of hydrogen peroxide used in ZOOM’s proprietary gel is much lower than other whitening gels that often contain 35%-50% hydrogen peroxide.

    Will it hurt?

    • The majority of our clients experience no pain or sensitivity after the ZOOM! Professional Teeth Whitening treatment. A very small percentage of customers may experience a minor dull “ache” following the procedure. Taking some sort of analgesic (pain-killer) almost always resolves the feeling. It is best to avoid very hot or very cold drinks for the first 24 hours if there is any tooth sensitivity.

How Long Does Zoom! Chairside Teeth Whitening take?

    • The complete procedure takes less than an hour. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed as little as by 45 minutes of bleaching. (A cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom! whitening session.)

How Does the Zoom! In-Office system work?

    • We will first examine your teeth and gums for good oral health. Next as you relax in the chair, our proprietary whitening gel is applied to your teeth and the ZOOM! light will be positioned over your teeth to activate the gel. The Zoom! light activated whitening gel’s active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. A study has shown that use of the Zoom! lamp increases the effectiveness of the Zoom! gel by 26% or more, giving an average improvement of up to eight shades. As you listen to music or nap, your teeth will lighten to their optimum, natural whiteness in about an hour.

What Will I Experience During the Zoom! In-Office Procedure?

    • During the procedure, patients may comfortably watch television or listen to music. Individuals with a strong gag reflex or anxiety may have difficulty undergoing the entire procedure.

How Long Do the Results Last?

    • The long-term results depend primarily on the individual. Certain habits, such as the use of tobacco products, drinking a lot of coffee, tea, dark soft drinks, and infrequent visits to the dentist for regular cleanings, etc., can work against the results. Regular professional care and use of the ZOOM! Home Maintenance Kit will help maintain the ZOOM! Some people may prefer to do the ZOOM! whitening treatment more frequently.
    • By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and occasional touch-ups with Zoom! Weekender or Nite White gel. These are professional formula products designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. They are available only through your dental professional.

    Are There Any Side Effects?

    • Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients. The Zoom! light generates minimal heat which is the usual source of discomfort. On rare occasions, minor tingling sensations are experienced immediately after the procedure, but always dissipate. You can also ask your dentist to supply you with anti-sensitivity toothpaste for use prior to treatment.

Will My Dental Insurance Cover This Procedure?

    • No. As with most cosmetic dental procedures, insurance will not cover the treatment cost.

Is Zoom Teeth Whitening Procedure for Everyone?

    • Virtually everyone wanting to lighten his or her teeth can benefit from using ZOOM! - including people with severe food, coffee, tobacco or tetracycline stains. The dental examination by the dentist will determine if you are a good candidate for whitening at the time of your free consultation. If the dentist uncovers a condition that would delay whitening, you will be treated for your primary condition.

How Old Do You Have To Be?

    • Currently, the minimum age is 16 years old. However, we are researching a product for teens which should be available later this year.

Will the Zoom Procedure Whiten My Existing Crowns / Veneers / Bonds, etc.?

    • The ZOOM! Professional Teeth Whitening treatment has been successful at removing stains from crowns (caps), veneers or bonded teeth. However, a whitening treatment in general cannot change the color of the caps, veneers or bonds. We recommend that you discuss your situation to determine what you can expect.

Can I Have This Done if I am Pregnant?

    • While there are no known constraints for pregnant women, some may experience gum sensitivity. Pregnant women may wish to defer having the procedure until after pregnancy.

How Can I Maintain My New White Teeth?

    • We recommend the following to maintain your new Smile:
      • Brush your teeth twice daily or after each meal; floss daily
      • Use a soft bristle toothbrush
      • Visit your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups (recommendation: every 6 months)
